My Personal Pipeline

Below is a quick run though my current workflow process

Brainstorm
This step includes deliberation of different ideas for a new project, and how they can be expressed visually. After careful thought, the plan best suited for animators and the audience is chosen.

Some questions I consider:
What story is being told?
Who is the intended audience?
What is happening in the scene?
Will there be music, dialogue, physical contact between characters or objects?
What camera(s) will be used?

Research

Researching includes finding visual references to aid with overall designs, and determining the animation style.

This step is critical to clarify uncertainties and helps to maintain a smooth work flow.

Sketch & Design

The character design is developed from previous sketches, and then input from a specialist is analyzed for revisions.

These revisions are then applied directly into Harmony.

Import Into Toon Boom
The character guide is brought into Toon Boom and a peg is added for safe manipulation.

Further thought about how the character will be broken down is made to determine the following: which parts need to be able to move, how will they move, and where on the hierarchy will they be placed.

The colour pallet is then created, which consists of all the colours needed for the character, cutters, handles, etc.

Create The Artwork & Rig
Drawings for each individual part of the character are created and named accordingly. In the node view, starting from the top of the hierarchy, each drawing is grouped and placed in order.

Beginning with the main character view, the different parts of the character are drawn in their respective nodes. Their pivot points are set at this time.

Deformers are added once every drawing is complete. The pivot points are double checked to make sure they haven't moved.

The finishing touches include adding cutters, auto-patches, and other nodes needed to make the character look complete. Finally, the node view is organized and the hierarchy and character are tested for it's intended use.
